Breath

For the Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”  Job 33:4 (NIV)

  • What is breath?
  • The physical air we breathe and the live-giving essence contained within it are nonidentical.  The breath connects the conscious and the subconscious; is influenced by and influences our emotions; and yokes the body, mind and spirit.
  • Breathe. Deep – wide – long, like His love is for us.

Opening Prayer: Lord God, I want to be used by you for Your eternal purposes of loving others and sharing the gospel truth to the ends of the earth. I believe that the Spirit of God, the energy of life, is present in every breath I take. Help me to breathe with intention. I want to draw closer to you and to know you more. I choose to live animated by your spirit, and guided by your wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. May your will be done. In your precious name I pray, Amen.

Breath Prayer:  Inhale:  courage / life

                           Exhale: fear / apathy

“The LORD merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born.” Psalm 33:6 (NLT)

  • This Hebrew word (רוּחַ) pronounced rûaḥ, a feminine noun, could have also been translated: wind of heaven, breath of animation, mind of moral character, Spirit of God, energy of life.
  • God spoke and created. Through the Holy Spirit, life and light were born.
  • The first thing we did as we entered the world was take a great inhale; and the last act upon our death is an exhale. We do not have life without first being created, then receiving breath.

“In whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind?” Job 12:10 (NKJV

  • It could be said that how we interact with our breath, the essence of life, affects us.
  • As we continue to move and worship, become more aware of how you breathe. Subtle temperature shifts from inhale to exhale. Expansion in the ribs. Movement of the clothing on the skin.
  • Over time you may notice how the quality of the air effects your health; how your natural breath changes with your emotions; and how your posture and movement affect your breath. But for now, in this moment, just breathe. Deep and wide and long, like His love is for us.

“As long as my breath is in me, and the breath of God in my nostrils, my lips will not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.” Job 27:3-4 (NKJV)

  • Where is your focus? Is it on the constantly shifting chaos and wickedness of the world, or the reliable steady loving presence of the Lord?

  • … I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills,” Exodus 31:3 (NIV)

    • Did you hear that? You have been filled with the Spirit of God! You have been filled with access to wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and the energy of life. Praise Him!

“Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.” Psalm 150:6

For the Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”  Job 33:4

    • What is breath?
    • The breath yokes the body, mind and spirit; and is a way for us to acknowledge and ignite God’s presence, the energy of life, within us.
    • How will you use your breath to yoke to the Holy Spirit today?

    Closing Prayer:

“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

    (Numbers 6: 24-26)

May the blessings of this practice remain with you,

enriching your life and the lives of those you meet.

It is in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit I pray,

    Amen

Thank you for practicing with me,

    Shalom
